Lifestyle Portrait Photography For Peel Energy Recovery Centre
Back in November, BP imaging‘s photographer John Lynch shot lifestyle portraits for the Region of Peel – Energy Recovery Centre for website use. The task was to photograph portraits and create a background simulating a sunny and blue sky. Our large studio (with a fresh coating of blue paint) and studio lighting made it possible to complete the project effectively.
The Peel Energy Recovery Centre is proposed to open in 2020. The project addresses the issue of the remaining household waste after we reduce, reuse, recycle and compost. Waste management is becoming more of an issue as the Peel region continues to grow and with modern technology the Energy Recovery Centre will create energy from waste turning garbage into a resource through the process of thermal conversion. The centre will reduce the footprint on the environment by reducing the amount of garbage going to landfills by up to 90 percent.
The photo shoot took 3 hours to complete which is relatively quick and efficient for shooting portrait photography for 11 different models. If the lifestyle portrait photography was taken outdoors in November, it would have taken much longer due to a number of complications. During that time of year the sun hits the earth at a lower angle, the days are becoming shorter and the minimal sunlight moves fairly quickly. In order to set up the correct lighting and angle for the final portraits, the photographer would have to be moving constantly and shoot at a time when the sun is at its highest. SunCalc is a useful tool to determine sun position, sunlight phases, sunrise, sunset, dusk and dawn. Our photographers often use this tool when preparing to shoot outdoors to estimate the optimal time and location of the sun. The temperature is another complication, in November it is too cold for shooting these portraits (considering the models were wearing indoors business attire), on top of that the weather conditions would have to be perfect to get the desired background of a clear blue sky with no clouds. The 11 models had varying height which would create an issue setting up the photograph with the sun in the right position behind the model.
To solve all of these problems and save time, the Bochsler Photo Imaging team decided to bring the outdoors into a controlled environment in our photography facility. In our warm studio there were no complications, the models were set up on a step platform and the lighting was adjusted to the height of the model for the perfect photograph. Below is a “behind the scenes” look at one of BP imaging’s studios. The background was painted a light blue to match the colour of the sky and the lighting equipment was used to create the appearance of the sun directly behind the models.
